Character Creation Guidelines
In order to make all these flavors of d20 play nice together, all characters should follow a few basic guidelines, based on Pathfinder and d20 Modern:
0) Think up a character concept.
Between D&D/Pathfinder and d20 Modern, we can cover most ideas, but there are a few more specific settings available. Here’s a list of the House Sourcebook Collection I have available, but if you have others, you can use those too.
Every character should have an item of personal importance – this token will serve as the Guild Key that brings you to Sigil and marks you as a member of Guild 109.
1) Ability Scores
Roll 4d6, discard the lowest die and add the remaining 3 dice together. Do that 6 times and assign them to the six ability scores.
2) Race, Class, and Feats
Try to stick to one source system for your starting character – don’t go crazy mix-and-matching each of your options from a different book. If you have a character concept that really calls for it, run it by me, but a big part of the fun is the fish-out-of-water element of characters that make perfect sense within their original universe.
We’ll use the Pathfinder rules for favored classes for all characters. When you make a character, select any class to be your Favored Class (regardless of race). Each time you take a level in that class (including 1st level), you gain either 1 bonus Hit Point or 1 bonus Skill Rank.
Since we are using Pathfinder as the base system, use that skill mechanic. It’s pretty similar to most other d20 systems with a few changes:
- Don’t multiply your 1st level skill points but 4, you get the same number of skills each level.
- The maximum number of ranks you can put into a skill is equal to your character level.
- Cross-class skills don’t cost extra ranks, instead, each Class skill in which you have at least 1 rank gets an extra +3 bonus.
Rather than try to build a standardized skill list for all the systems, use the skill list that is normal for your source setting. When the DM calls for a test of a skill that isn’t on your list, or if you have a different skill that you think would work better, ask if you can test that skill instead.
4) Combat Maneuvers
Pathfinder doesn’t use opposed rolls for things like Grapple or Trip. Instead each creature has a Combat Maneuver Bonus (CMB), which is used as the attack bonus special attacks, and a Combat Maneuver Defense (CMD), which works like an AC for special attacks.
- CMB: BAB + STR Mod + Size Mod + Misc Mod
- CMD: 10 + BAB + STR Mod + DEX Mod + Size Mod + Misc Mod
5) Action Points
All Player Characters receive action points every level. They do not carry over from one level to the next; instead, they refresh to the character’s maximum amount at each level. Each level a character gains 5 + 1/2 character level Action Points (5 at 1st level, 7 at 4th, etc.)
Action points can be used to add +1d6 to any d20 Check. The extra die can be added after the d20 is rolled, but it must be committed before you learn whether your check was a success or failure. Some classes and feats grant additional uses for action points.
And you earn extra action points in-game by doing cool things, or out-of-game for contributing to the wiki – post cool character stuff, design the guild-seal, make a campaign banner, or something cool.
Rather than track individual gold pieces or dollars, we will use the Wealth System from d20 Modern, as explained here.
A PC’s starting wealth score is 7, +1 if the character is trained in a Craft or Profession skill.
If the PC’s base system uses the Career System (such as d20 Modern or d20 Future), starting wealth is instead 3 + Career Bonus +1 for a trained Craft or Profession skill.
Starting equipment is purchased using this Wealth score, and any remainder reflects the character’s available resources. The best way to buy starting gear is to make a list of all the equipment you think you should have. You can buy anything with a Purchase DC lower than your Wealth Score without changing your Score, so buy that stuff first. Then you should buy more expensive things; remember that each expensive item you buy will lower your score, so make sure you prioritize your purchases. You can take 10 on Wealth Checks at character creation (but can’t take 20), so you can buy anything with a purchase DC of 10 + Wealth Score.
We will be using Pathfinder advancement as described here. The main difference from standard d20 is the XP required to level (we’re using Medium progression) and the Feat Progression (characters gain a feat at every odd-numbered level, instead of every third level).
